How to Care for Your Cut Flower Peonies

Comment prendre soin de vos pivoines en fleurs coupées

Have you ordered cut flower peonies from Pivoinerie Lili? Lucky!!!

How to Care for Your Peonies After They Arrive

Our peonies are harvested at the mature bud stage. When your flowers arrive, they will be thirsty.

Protect them from excessive heat and follow the instructions below:

  • Upon arrival, immediately remove the stems from the box. The stems may appear "tired" when you open the box. Prepare containers with cold water so they hydrate quickly.
  • Cut the stems at an angle.
  • The size of most of our flowers will surprise you, so make sure there are not too many buds in each container to allow them to fully open.
  • Peonies drink a lot of water, so watch your flowers carefully. Fill containers with cool water as needed.
  • The water should be changed every two to three days. Cutting back the stems will also extend the vase life.
  • Flowers can be stored in a refrigerator or cold room for 2-3 weeks. Take the flowers out of the refrigerator when you want and need them.
  • DO NOT store flowers with vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits give off ethylene gas, which will shorten the vase life of the peony.

If you want your peonies to open slower or faster

To preserve your flowers for later use: place the flowers in water or in a cardboard box without water immediately in a cold room or in the refrigerator. Both methods with or without water work well.

To get your flowers opened faster for a special event: remove the flowers from the refrigerator and watch them carefully. Once your flowers are opened, place them back in the fridge in water until you are ready to use them for the big day. To speed up the opening of the flowers: gently tap the base of the flower bud on the green petals at the base of it. Continue rotating until you have circled the flower. This will loosen the inner petals. Remove the sepals. Another tip, place your flowers in hot water (without being hot, hot tap water will do the job gently). When the flower is open, place it back in cool, cool water. Again: Keep flowers in a warm, bright room to encourage them to open more quickly.
